Save $300 on Your Cell Phone Bill with a Prepaid Phone

by John on August 21, 2009

cell-phone-prepaid-plan-save-moneyIn an independent Illinois study in which 7,000 phone bills were analyzed, researchers discovered that the average cell phone user could be saving about $300 on their cell phone bills.

One interesting fact noted is that the large majority of these bills averaged seven hours or more of unused talk time, representing half of the time paid for.  In other words, most people are overpaying 100%.  This is a waste of money.

The study is not specifically about prepaid cell phone plans, but it is clear that you can easily save money on your bill by cutting back on extra features, lowering your minutes, or switching to a lower cost prepaid plan.

One of the truths this study reveals that that most people overpay for their cell phone plans and may not even know it. It is alarmingly easy to pay twice the amount that you should.  Will some of the recent prepaid cell phone plans available on the market, there truly is no reason to pay for a minute more of talk time than you use.

Many people don’t match their cell phone plans  to their usage habits, which results in them overpaying. It is important that consumers have as much information as possible in terms of what plans are available and what kind of service they provide.  Just because you have been in a contract plan for 8 years and you are comfortable with renewing your plan every two years and getting a free phone, doesn’t mean you should stick with it.

There are simple things cell phone users can do to cut costs, like figure out the network they call to the most.  For example, if you call someone every day on the Sprint network, but you’re on Verizon, it may make sense to swtich to Sprint in-calling.  One site that provides useful consumer information is billshrink.com, which T-Mobile has partnered up with.

There have never been more affordable and attractive prepaid phone plans than there are now. For instance, there are plans from Tracfone’s Straight Talk, Boost Mobile, and MetroPCS that all cost between $30 to $50 each month. This is already more affordable than many contract based cell phone plans. There are plans from each of these providers that are unlimited, which means it is impossible to “go over” your minutes or overpay.

I agree 100% with this article…but there is even more you can do. I now use the software at this site called Call Limiter. Its great. I know how much I can spend and I set up a limit so I don’t go over it.

Its great :)
