Prepaid Cell Phone Plans

by John on September 12, 2014

prepaid-phone-plansThere has probably never been a better time to be a prepaid wireless subscriber.  Seriously.

Many people have turned to prepaid cell phone plans during this time of economic upheaval as a way to save money on their monthly cell phone bill. The average contract cell phone user spends approximately $80 per month, while the average prepaid user spends around $50.

And there are quite a few plans out there you can get for just under that price point–many of which provide unlimited service, which means it is impossible to “go over” your minutes or be forced to overpay.  But more on this in a minute.

First, here are some reasons people are becoming more interested in prepaid cell phone plans.

1) No Contracts.

2) No Termination Fees.

3) Saving Money.

4) More Control over How Many Minutes Have to Be Purchased.

5) No Longer are Prepaid Phones Seen Only as an Option for Those with bad credit.

6) No Commitment.  You can leave your prepaid wireless provider at any time.  There are no fees.

I’ve been considering a prepaid phone. TracFone and Straight Talk seem to be the best, followed up by MetroPCS at a distant second. I am looking for like an android prepaid phone or something like that. I also want to save money. What do you recommend?

If you are really looking for an android prepaid phone, then out of the companies you mentioned, MetroPCS is the only one with android phones. If you meant that you want a smart phone that’s prepaid, Straight Talk has the Nokia 6790, the Nokia E71, and the Samsung t528G (the first two of which are smart phones). TracFone has a touch screen phone the LG 800G and the LG 501G. Hope that helps.

Updated: Now, as you may have heard, you can get Straight Talk Android phones as well as Net10 Android phones. As of now, both companies have two Android models available. So it’s no longer just MetroPCS and Virgin that have these phones.

Prepaid plans are the only ones I use now. TracFone is my favorite–I always save money.

I’ve had a bunch of prepaid phones and the best company in my opinion is tracfone.

Prepaid phones are a great way to save, especially with an unlimited plan.

I think that prepaid phones are the way to go for sure.

@Duffy – That’s very true for a lot of people.

Prepaid really is the way to go now. why sign anything for multiple years when you can find higher end phones on pre-pay plans. It doesn’t make sense and I think that most people feel this way. MetroPCS, T-Mobile prepaid, and Virgin have some good phones and options.

There are some nice plans out right now for pre-pay phones. I like tracfone and metropcs.

Brighton – You’re right, there are some very nice prepaid plans and offers out there. Both of the companies you mention are good places to start. Also look at Net10 and Straight Talk (both owned by TracFone actually) and also Virgin Mobile (which has one of the best prepaid phone out there, the Motorola Triumph Android). Keep your eyes peeled for deals.

Good luck. A lot of our readers have TracFones.
