MetroPCS vs Straight Talk

There is a battle of sorts going on in the prepaid industry.  And there aren’t only two sides.  There are more like six sides since there are several good prepaid companies that are probably worthy of your business (depending on the circumstances).  These companies are TracFone (a perennial favorite for its cheap bottom of the barrel rates), Net10 (which is very similar to TracFone), Straight Talk, MetroPCS, and Boost Mobile (a Sprint company).  These companies all have good prepaid programs.  But let’s talk about Metro PCS and Straight Talk, in particular the Unlimited plans from these two companies.

Straight Talk vs Metro PCS: The Battle

The Metro PCS Family unlimited plan is being talked about a lot (mostly because of the onslaught of commercials you see on TV and hear on the radio but also because there is money to be saved).  The way you save money with the Metro PCS Unlimited plan is through a multiple line discount.  For every line you purchase and add to one plan, you can save $5 per line up to five for a total monthly savings of $25.  This can add up and might make sense for people with several people they need to provide phones for.  The basic unlimited Metro PCS Family plan starts at $40, so for each line you could only be paying $35 per month.  Of course, if you want more out of your phone service, you have to pay more and you can go up the scale with Metro PCS.

Straight Talk has an unlimited plan that costs $45 per month and gives you unlimited everything basically.  It can be a very good plan for the right circumstances.  Definitely have a look at both of these plans and see how they stack up against your cellular phone needs.  There is no multiple line discount for the Straight Talk plans but you can often find great deals on cell phones, like the current one for the LG 620 Straight Talk phone.

I don’t know. I think it depends on one’s needs. For example, I have a friend who uses Metro PCS, but only uses it in Miami. He went out of town, and the reception was spotty, if it was even there. However, I have used my straight talk phone in various cities and have had consistent reception. I have heard, however, that Straight Talk and Tracfone utilize some of the bigger networks, such as Verizon and the calls go through their network. Can anyone confirm this or provide some information on it?
